Welcome to 3rd grade! I’m so happy to be your teacher this year. I am looking forward to teaching you many new things and having the chance to learn new things from you! It will be an exciting year with many challenges and adventures for all of us.
This will be my 20th year teaching at Center School and I love what I do. I also love yoga, the color orange, pizza, Dunkin Donuts iced coffee and dogs. I enjoy reading and try to find time to read every night. I’m a big fan of Hamilton, the musical, and live theater. I live right here in Mattapoisett with my husband, “Mr. T.”, (but not the Mr. T. from our school), and our dog Jackson. I have two children, Brian and Courtney. You might have seen me walking around town this summer. That’s another one of my favorite things to do…although I don’t do it as much when the weather’s cold. Brrr. I’m good at some things and not good at others. I’m a great listener and always try to be very helpful. I do NOT have a green thumb…plants don’t stand a chance with me! I’ve learned everyone has strengths and weaknesses.
The first day of school will be here before we know it. To help you get ready for the big day, I would like to ask you to bring in a few things. The first is a book to read and a snack. Almost every day during the school year, I try to find time for silent reading while you eat your snack from home. (Because some students may have food allergies or sensitivities, I do not provide snacks. It’s much safer to bring your snack from home.) You will always need to have a book in your desk that you will enjoy reading during this time. “Snack & Silent Reading” quickly becomes a nice part of our morning as everyone has the chance to quietly relax, read a good book and have a little power snack.
I am also asking that you bring in a one or one and a half inch, three-ring binder. During the year, we will be creating Math Journals & Writing Portfolios. In June this binder will be chock full of important stuff you’ve worked on all year and you will bring it home with you. Pick your favorite color, or design on the binder as it will be yours forever. If you don’t have time to shop, or it wasn’t in the plans to get one this year, don’t worry! I have extras and can give you one.
The next item I’m asking for is a picture of just you! It doesn’t need to be too big, around 4x6” is perfect. We’ll be working on a special project and your picture will make it perfect. Ask a grown-up to put it in an envelope or plastic bag with your name on the back. We’ll return the picture when we’re done and we promise to not mess it up.
Well, that’s all for now. I hope you’re as excited about third grade as I am. Enjoy the rest of your summer and I’ll see you on the first day of school!
Your new friend, Mrs. Tranfaglia (“Mrs. T.”) :)
